Republicans criticize DOJ lawsuit against GOP Senate candidate’s business as ‘politicized’.

Republicans are up in arms over the Department of Justice’s lawsuit against the coal enterprise of West Virginia Governor Jim Justice II. Justice is currently running for Senate against incumbent Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.).

The DOJ announced the lawsuit on May 31, citing unpaid court fines and reclamation fees for Justice’s 13 coal companies. The suit names James Justice III, the governor’s son who took over running the companies after Justice II was elected as governor.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) both criticized the lawsuit, with Capito calling it “politicized” and Daines calling it “outrageous” and an example of the Biden administration “weaponizing” the DOJ for political purposes.

The Justice campaign has also denounced the lawsuit, characterizing it as a political move against the Republican candidate. Campaign manager Roman Stuffer accused the Biden administration of “panicking” over polls showing Justice in the lead.

DOJ ‘Gone Totally Rogue’

Republicans see the lawsuit as yet another example of inappropriate actions by the DOJ. Some have even gone so far as to say that the department has “gone totally rogue.”
