Poll: 64% Of Americans See ‘Cancel Culture’ As A Threat To Their Freedom

A poll released by The Hill on Monday showed that 64% of Americans believe that “cancel culture” is a threat to their freedom.

The information comes from a Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey released exclusively to The Hill showing that 64% of the respondents to the survey stated “that there is ‘a growing cancel culture’ that is a threat to their freedom, while 36 percent said they did not view it as a threat to their freedom.”

The poll also showed that 36% of respondents said that cancel culture is a “big problem.” Thirty-two percent said it was a “moderate problem,” and 20% said it was a “small problem.” Thirteen percent said it is “not a problem.”

Merriam-Webster defines “cancel culture” as “the practice or tendency of engaging in mass canceling … as a way of expressing disapproval and exerting social pressure.”

The results of the survey reveal a potential growing sense of people being unnerved by recent “cancellations” in the press and culture. Several high-profile “cancellations” have brought the topic up as a main conversation in America, whether it is through the banning of books, such as the decision of Dr. Seuss Enterprises to stop publishing several of Dr. Seuss children’s books earlier this month or the most recent act of Scholastic to pull the “Captain Underpants” spinoff due to its alleged “passive racism.”

Members of the media have also recently suffered cancellations and firings over unpopular statements. The Daily Wire reported on the firing of former television show host Piers Morgan after he said that he did not believe many of the accusations against the Royal Family that Meghan Markle made during her interview with Oprah Winfrey. Morgan refused to say that he was sorry for the things that he said.

“And even if I did apologize, that wouldn’t be the end of it. The woke brigade would keep coming for me, demanding I apologize for everything else they find offensive – which of course, is absolutely everything,” he said.

Morgan also said that he doesn’t have any hard feelings against the ITV network. “I don’t have any problem with ITV, my problem is with the increasingly insidious woke cancel culture that’s now infesting all companies like ITV,” Morgan said. “If allowed to continue unchecked, it will make it virtually impossible for anyone with an opinionated personality to survive in any workplace.”

Mark Penn, the director of the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey released by The Hill, said, “It is a chilling finding that most people in the country now are afraid they would be fired if they expressed their real views on social media … The public generally gives negative ratings to social media companies and sees the movement as more about censorship rather than trying to correct wrongs. It is growing as a national issue.”

The Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey included 1,945 registered voters and was done from March 24 to 25. It is a joint effort of the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University and The Harris Poll. The Hill reported that full survey results will be online at a later time this week.
