Poll: By Wide Margin, Americans Say Border Worse Under Biden
Americans are not big fans of President Joe Biden’s efforts at the U.S.-Mexico border.
A new poll by Fox News found that voters say U.S. border security is worse today than it was two years ago, with 46% saying it is worse and just 15% saying it is better. About a third (33%) said the situation is about the same In another finding, a majority disapprove of Biden’s handling of the border crisis.
“By an 18-point margin, more disapprove (52 percent) than approve (34 percent) of his performance on immigration. Views are nearly identical on border security, as just over half disapprove (51 percent vs. 35 percent approve),” the latest Fox News survey found.
“Two-thirds are extremely or very concerned about both illegal immigration (67 percent) and the treatment of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border (65 percent). That places these concerns in a second-tier, behind top items like the economy (78 percent), gun laws (74 percent) and health care (73 percent), but ahead of others such as voter suppression (60 percent), voter fraud (59 percent), being able to pay bills (58 percent), and climate change (57 percent),” Fox reported.
In another poll, more than half of those surveyed said they disapprove of Biden‘s handling of the surge in Central American migrants, particularly young unaccompanied children.
In the Washington Post/ABC News poll, 53% said they disapprove at least somewhat of the job Biden has done to handle the border crisis, while 37% approved. Nearly half — 44% —strongly disapproved. Still, 64% of Democrats approve of Biden’s handling, compared to 10% of Republicans.
The Fox poll found that Americans blame Biden.
“Some 75 percent of Republicans think border security is worse, up from just 6 percent who felt that way the last time the question was asked when Donald Trump was president in June 2018. For Democrats, 27 percent say border security is better now, up from 13 percent,” Fox reported. “People see Biden as responsible for the current border situation. Fifty-six percent of voters think the increase of migrants trying to enter the U.S. is ‘completely’ or ‘mostly’ happening because Biden won the election.”
In some of his first actions in office, Biden did away with the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) — also known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy — which kept foreigners who tried to enter the U.S. illegally in camps in Mexico while they awaited hearings. Instead, Biden returned to a “catch-and-release” policy in which illegal aliens are allowed to enter the U.S.
Suddenly, the flow of foreigners to the border exploded. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents apprehended nearly 100,000 people at the border in February. Last April, just more than 16,000 were captured at the border, according to Pew data.
Last month, after weeks of denying journalists access to an overcrowded migrant facility at the U.S.-Mexico border, reporters were finally allowed in to get their first look.
A pool of selected reporters and photographers was allowed into the center in Donna, Texas, where more than 4,000 migrants are held. Some 3,400 are unaccompanied minors. Photos show migrants packed into plexiglass pods, strewn with shiny Mylar blankets.
“There are eight ‘pods’ in total — critics have called them ‘cages’ in reference to criticism leveled at the Trump administration — each containing 500-600 migrants,” Fox News reported. “Guidelines say there should only be 32 migrants in each pod. Donna’s temporary facility is 140,000 square feet. Children sleep on three-inch gym mats and lie under metallic foil blankets. Kids are given masks but many don’t wear them. In one room, pool reporters saw a purple and pink pen surrounding a group of 27 children on an alphabet rug, ranging from 3-9 years old. The youngest child is just four months old.”
