Poll: Democrats Want Biden Replaced in 2024
A plurality of Democrats want President Joe Biden to be replaced as their party’s candidate in the 2024 election, a poll found Monday.
The poll, which was conducted by NPR, PBS, and Marist College, found that 44 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents think “their party will have a better chance winning the White House” with someone other than Biden as nominee. Thirty-six percent want to keep the president at the top of the ticket, and 20 percent are unsure.
A slim plurality of those polled—42 percent—also said the Democratic Party is “the bigger threat” to democracy. Forty-one percent said the Republican Party, and 8 percent said both parties.
The poll is one of several to find that Biden’s approval rating is underwater, with 49 percent of respondents saying they disapprove of the president’s performance. Biden’s FiveThirtyEight polling average shows an even more drastic disapproval rate: Fifty-one percent disapprove of the president, and only 43 percent approve.
In contrast to Biden’s unpopularity with Democrats, 50 percent of Republicans say their party is more likely to win the White House with former president Donald Trump as standard-bearer.
Biden’s poor poll numbers come as the president faces a stagnating economy, increasing inflation, a crisis on the southern border, and pushback from his own party on his domestic agenda.
