Gov. Ron DeSantis Has Brighter Future with Key Voting Group, Poll Shows
A new poll conducted by Economist-YouGov reveals that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) may have a more promising future with a crucial voting group than former President Donald Trump or President Joe Biden.
Independents Prefer DeSantis Over Trump and Biden
When asked if they want him to run for president in 2024, independents are showing stronger support for DeSantis compared to Trump and Biden. The majority of independent voters do not want Biden or Trump to run in 2024. Specifically, 67% of independents believe Biden should not run, while 59% believe Trump should not run.
While a plurality of independents also do not want DeSantis to run in 2024, the number of unsure voters offers more flexibility compared to the other two candidates. The survey shows that 47% of independent voters do not want DeSantis to run, 16% want him to run, and 36% are unsure.
DeSantis, as someone who has not been on a presidential ballot before, has more room to grow with independents compared to Biden and Trump, who already have clear opinions among independent voters.
Opinions Among Trump and Biden Voters
Among those who voted for Trump in 2020, 39% believe DeSantis should run, 31% believe he should not run, and 30% are unsure. Overall, 51% of those surveyed who voted for Trump do not want DeSantis to run, which is higher than the percentage for Trump and Biden.
According to the poll, 63% of Trump’s 2020 voters believe he should run again in 2024, while 42% of Biden’s 2020 voters believe he should run for reelection. Among the entire group of adults surveyed, 63% believe Biden should not run in 2024, and 57% believe Trump should not run in 2024.
Concerns About Trump and Biden
Other polls have also highlighted unique concerns about Trump and Biden compared to other candidates. A recent NBC News poll shows that a majority of adults have major or moderate concerns about both men’s physical and mental health.
In the overall polling average compiled by RealClearPolitics, Trump is leading the GOP presidential field with DeSantis in second place. The rest of the field is significantly behind these two Florida men. Biden is expected to be renominated by the Democratic Party in 2024, and there are no major challengers within the party.
