After years of legal battles accusing Pornhub of profiting from explicit videos involving minors and sexual abuse, the website will now require age and consent verification for all individuals featured in uploaded content.
Pornhub and its parent company, Aylo, have faced numerous allegations of profiting from videos without clear consent and failing to verify the ages of participants.
An email obtained by 404 Media states that Pornhub will now require “verification of the age and consent of every person” appearing in uploaded videos, effective as of Tuesday.
“On January 23, 2024, in addition to providing approved Co-Performer IDs, we will also require proof of consent, such as Signed Release Forms, when a new Co-Performer is added onto a Model account,” the email stated.
The goal, according to Pornhub, is to create a safer platform for content creators and users.
However, Laila Mickelwait, founder of Traffickinghub, expressed skepticism in a video posted on Twitter, stating that Pornhub’s rule update is not worthy of praise. Mickelwait believes that the loss of business partners and ongoing lawsuits are the real reasons behind the change.
“Even to this day, the site is still full of videos that are unverified,” Mickelwait said. “Because this change takes place from today, going forward. However, it isn’t being enacted retroactively, meaning all of the videos that have been uploaded to the site previously that were not verified for age or consent are remaining on the site.”
Mickelwait demanded that all videos without confirmed age or consent be taken down. She also raised concerns about the possibility of illicit content being stored on Pornhub’s platform.
“But even if they do all of this, it’s too little, and it’s too late,” Mickelwait asserted. “Because they have spent 17 years globally distributing, profiting from, and shattering the lives of countless victims across the world.”
Mickelwait emphasized the need to hold Pornhub accountable and called for the complete shutdown of the website, despite the recent changes.
After a New York Times report in December 2020 exposed Pornhub’s involvement in child sex abuse content, the website faced significant backlash. Pornhub removed millions of videos, including 118 verified cases of child sex abuse, and implemented new guidelines. Aylo, the parent company of Pornhub, admitted in federal court to profiting from sex trafficking and agreed to surveillance, financial penalties, and compensation for victims.
Aylo faced charges related to hosting pornographic videos and engaging in unlawful transactions with other websites involved in sex trafficking. These websites were subsequently taken down.
In 2017, women who had been deceived into recording videos for GirlsDoPorn and GirlsDoToys, which were then uploaded to Pornhub without their consent, filed a civil action. Prosecutors argued that Aylo should have known that the participants in these videos, including teenagers and minors, did not give their consent. Aylo terminated its partnership with GirlsDoPorn in 2019 and removed the problematic content in December 2020.

How does Pornhub’s new policy of requiring age and consent verification aim to create a safer platform?
After years of legal battles and facing numerous allegations, Pornhub, a popular adult content website, has announced that it will now require age and consent verification for all individuals featured in uploaded content. The aim of this new policy is to create a safer platform for both content creators and users.
For a long time, Pornhub and its parent company, Aylo, have been accused of profiting from videos without clear consent and failing to verify the ages of participants. These accusations have been a cause for concern, especially in cases where explicit videos involving minors and sexual abuse were being circulated on the website.
An email obtained by 404 Media revealed that Pornhub will now require “verification of the age and consent of every person” appearing in uploaded videos, effective as of Tuesday. This means that individuals featured in videos will need to provide proof of consent, such as signed release forms, in addition to Co-Performer IDs. By implementing these verification measures, Pornhub hopes to address the concerns raised against it and ensure that the content on its platform is legal and consensual.
However, not everyone is convinced that these changes are genuine. Laila Mickelwait, the founder of Traffickinghub, expressed skepticism in a video posted on Twitter. Mickelwait believes that the loss of business partners and ongoing lawsuits are the real reasons behind the change, rather than a genuine commitment to creating a safer platform.
She also raised concerns about the fact that the new policy will not be applied retroactively. This means that all the videos uploaded to the site prior to this change, which were not verified for age or consent, will remain on the site. Mickelwait demanded that all such videos be taken down and emphasized the need for Pornhub to be held accountable for its actions.
It is important to note that this is not the first time Pornhub has faced backlash. In December 2020, a New York Times report exposed the website’s involvement in child sex abuse content. Following the report, Pornhub removed millions of videos, including 118 verified cases of child sex abuse, and implemented new guidelines. Aylo, the parent company of Pornhub, admitted in federal court to profiting from sex trafficking and agreed to financial penalties and compensation for victims.
Aylo also faced charges related to hosting pornographic videos and engaging in unlawful transactions with other websites involved in sex trafficking, resulting in those websites being taken down.
In addition, a civil action was filed in 2017 by women who had been deceived into recording videos for GirlsDoPorn and GirlsDoToys, which were then uploaded to Pornhub without their consent. Prosecutors argued that Aylo should have known that the participants in these videos, including teenagers and minors, did not give their consent. Aylo terminated its partnership with GirlsDoPorn in 2019 and removed the videos from its platform.
Despite these recent changes and actions taken by Pornhub, Mickelwait’s organization, Traffickinghub, continues to call for the complete shutdown of the website. According to Mickelwait, the harm caused by Pornhub over the years cannot be undone by these developments and the website should be held accountable for its history of distribution and profiting from explicit content.
Overall, the recent announcement by Pornhub regarding age and consent verification is a step in the right direction towards creating a safer online environment. However, it remains to be seen whether these changes are genuinely motivated by a commitment to ensuring legal and consensual content, or if they are simply a response to external pressures and legal challenges faced by the company. The ongoing discussions surrounding accountability and the impact of explicit content platforms on individuals involved require further attention and action from both Pornhub and the wider industry.
