Pornhub blocks access in Montana ahead of age verification law
Pornhub to Block Access in Montana Ahead of Age Verification Law
In a bold move, pornography giant Pornhub has announced that it will be cutting off access to users in Montana ahead of the implementation of a state law requiring age verification for explicit content sites.
The law, set to take effect on January 1, aims to protect children from exposure to pornography by mandating age verification on explicit sites. Similar legislation has been passed in states like Utah and Virginia, leading Pornhub to block access in those states as well.
However, Pornhub has expressed concerns about the effectiveness and privacy risks associated with requiring users to provide their ID cards for access. According to Scripps News Helena, the company stated, “While safety and compliance are at the forefront of our mission, giving your ID card every time you want to visit an adult platform is not the most effective solution for protecting our users, and in fact, will put children and your privacy at risk.”
The law, known as SB 544, holds commercial entities liable if they knowingly distribute harmful material to minors without implementing reasonable age verification methods. It acknowledges the detrimental effects of pornography on minors’ brain development, emotional well-being, and relationships.
SB 544 passed with overwhelming support in the state House and Senate before being signed into law by Governor Greg Gianforte (R-MT) in May.

This move by Montana has inspired other state lawmakers, including Republicans in Tennessee, who are considering introducing similar legislation. Rep. Patsy Hazlewood recently proposed the “Protect Tennessee Minors Act,” which would require online pornography distributors to implement age verification measures.
Pornhub has faced scrutiny in recent undercover investigations by Sound Investigations, revealing discussions among company leaders about the negative impacts of pornography. In one video, a manager for Pornhub’s parent company admitted that pornography is unhealthy, addictive, and destructive.
Mike Farley, a Senior Product Manager at Aylo, stated in the footage, “I definitely think porn addiction is definitely a thing, that’s for sure. I don’t think it’s a positive thing in general.”
How can minors overcome age verification measures and access explicit content despite the implementation of such systems?
The company, implementing age verification measures can be ineffective as minors can easily obtain fake identification or use someone else’s ID to bypass the system. Moreover, the collection and storage of personal information raise significant privacy concerns for users.
While the intention behind the law is noble in protecting children from explicit content, the practicality and feasibility of implementing age verification measures on such a large scale remain questionable. Critics argue that it may push young users towards more dangerous and unregulated platforms that do not enforce any age restrictions.
In response to the upcoming law, Pornhub has opted to take a proactive approach and block access to users in Montana altogether. The decision is expected to come at a financial cost for the company, as Montana is home to a significant number of its users. However, Pornhub remains committed to prioritizing user privacy and ensuring compliance with the law.
The issue of age verification on explicit content websites is not a new one. Governments worldwide have been grappling with the challenge of keeping explicit material out of the hands of minors while respecting user privacy. Various solutions have been proposed, including the use of third-party age verification services or implementing stricter measures within a closed network.
However, the debate surrounding age verification is not limited to explicit content sites alone. The notion of restricting access to content based on age raises questions about digital freedom and individual rights. Critics argue that it sets a dangerous precedent that can lead to further restrictions on online content and censorship.
As society continues to grapple with the challenges of balancing child protection and user privacy, it is essential to seek solutions that strike a balance between the two. Education, parental guidance, and open conversations are crucial in ensuring children understand the potential risks of explicit content and how to navigate the digital world responsibly.
In conclusion, the decision by Pornhub to block access in Montana ahead of the implementation of the age verification law showcases the complexities and controversies surrounding the issue. While the aim to protect children from explicit content is commendable, finding effective solutions without infringing on user privacy and digital freedom remains a pressing challenge for regulators, technology companies, and society as a whole.
