GOP challenger to Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown backs Trump’s 2024 bid.
A Republican Endorses Trump for 2024 Presidential Run
A Republican who once criticized Donald Trump’s claims of voter fraud is now throwing his support behind the former president as he gears up for a third run at the White House. Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, who is currently running for Senate in a state that Trump won by 8 points in 2020, announced his endorsement of Trump in a press release that highlighted their shared vision for America’s potential.
“We’re in a battle for the heart and soul of our nation, and President Trump is that leader,” said LaRose, a Bronze Star recipient from his time in the Army.
While LaRose expressed his admiration for Trump’s fearlessness and ability to lead, he also acknowledged their differences on certain issues, particularly Trump’s claims of election fraud. However, LaRose emphasized that they both have a common goal of realizing America’s potential.
This endorsement comes as LaRose is running for Senate in a highly competitive primary race, where Trump’s endorsement could give him an edge over his opponents. LaRose is up against wealthy self-funders Bernie Moreno and Matt Dolan, who have contrasting views on Trump.
- Moreno is a staunch Trump supporter, attending a speech at the former president’s estate even after facing federal charges.
- Dolan, on the other hand, is a centrist Trump critic.
LaRose finds himself somewhere in between these two lanes, positioning himself as a candidate who can appeal to a broad range of voters. While he previously downplayed the significance of Trump’s endorsement, he now believes it could greatly impact his chances in the primary.
Trump’s influence over Ohio Republicans and the broader GOP electorate remains strong. He currently holds a significant lead over his closest rival, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, in national polls.
As the primary race heats up, all eyes will be on LaRose and his ability to navigate the delicate balance between aligning with Trump and maintaining his own principles.
