Third-party candidate may influence 2024 election towards Trump.
A Mysterious Political Organization Aims to Shake Up the 2024 Presidential Election
A nonprofit political organization with anonymous backers is seeking to field a third-party candidate for the 2024 presidential election. This intriguing move could have significant implications for the race, potentially benefiting former President Donald Trump, despite outward suggestions that the group is against his re-election.
The organization, known as No Labels, has been quietly operating for 13 years and is now laying the groundwork to run an alternative candidate if the 2024 election becomes a rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden. What makes No Labels unique is that its leadership is composed of both Republicans and Democrats, signaling a desire for a more bipartisan approach.
“We are preparing for the possibility of nominating a candidate. We have not yet committed to do so. We will run ONLY under the proper environmental conditions, which must be met for us to proceed,” the group said on its website.
While the exact conditions for their involvement remain undisclosed, No Labels has provided some hints. Benjamin Chavis, former executive director of the NAACP and a national co-chair of No Labels, revealed in an interview with NBC News that the group will withdraw its effort for an alternative candidate if polling by next spring shows that President Biden is “way, way out ahead” of Trump.
No Labels has also made it clear to Politico that they will exit the presidential race if the GOP nominates any candidate other than Trump, further emphasizing their intentions.
The identity of No Labels’ donors is shrouded in secrecy, with the organization arguing that revealing their names could subject them to scrutiny and intimidation. According to The Wall Street Journal, No Labels is not legally obligated to disclose its donors and reportedly operates with a budget of $70 million.
Possible ‘Spoiler’ Campaign
Ironically, despite No Labels’ opposition to Trump, a candidate from the organization could potentially sway the presidential race in critical areas, favoring the former president. Furthermore, the presence of a No Labels candidate could create a scenario where no candidate secures the necessary 270 electoral votes, leading to state delegations in the House choosing the winner, potentially benefiting the GOP nominee.
Benjamin Chavis emphasized in his NBC interview that “No Labels is not and will not be a spoiler in favor of Donald Trump in 2024.” However, a recent Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll reported by The Hill showed that 45 percent of respondents would vote for Trump in a hypothetical 2024 election, giving him a 6-point lead over Biden.
While third-party candidates have historically struggled to gain traction, there have been instances where they were accused of siphoning votes from popular contenders. The upcoming election could prove to be another interesting chapter in American political history.
