Pramila Jayapal retracts statement on Israel as ‘racist state’.

Congressional ⁤Progressive Caucus ​Chair ⁣Pramila ‍Jayapal (D-Wash.) ‌has⁢ sparked ⁤controversy with her recent⁢ comments about Israel. However, she ‍has​ since clarified her‌ statement.

During‌ a ⁣speech ‌at the annual conference for‍ the progressive ​organization​ Netroots Nation, Jayapal referred to Israel as a “racist state”‍ and expressed ⁤concern about ‍the⁤ diminishing ⁤possibility ⁢of ‌a two-state solution.⁣ These remarks drew criticism from fellow Democrats,⁢ including⁤ party leadership.

In response to the⁣ backlash,⁣ Jayapal issued a statement clarifying her position. She​ emphasized⁣ that she does ​not believe Israel as‍ a nation is racist, ‌but ‌rather ‍criticized ​Prime⁤ Minister ⁤Benjamin Netanyahu⁢ and his ⁤government⁢ for engaging⁣ in ​discriminatory ​and racist policies.

Despite​ her clarification, the⁢ Conference⁢ of ‌Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations condemned Jayapal’s initial remarks,⁤ calling them⁢ false and evocative of antisemitic‌ tropes.

On ⁤the⁤ other hand,⁤ progressive⁣ organization⁤ J Street​ applauded ​Jayapal’s statement, expressing ‌support⁣ for her stance ⁢against ‌discriminatory policies and⁢ harm to Israel’s‍ democracy.

House⁤ Democrat ⁣leadership,⁣ while ‍not directly addressing ​Jayapal, reaffirmed their support for Israel ‍as a Jewish and Democratic nation. They emphasized the ‌importance of ⁢the‌ special⁤ relationship between‍ the United States and Israel, ​as ‌well as⁢ their‍ commitment to a ⁤two-state solution.
