Pramila Jayapal retracts statement on Israel as ‘racist state’.
Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Backtracks on Israel Comments
Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) has sparked controversy with her recent comments about Israel. However, she has since clarified her statement.
During a speech at the annual conference for the progressive organization Netroots Nation, Jayapal referred to Israel as a “racist state” and expressed concern about the diminishing possibility of a two-state solution. These remarks drew criticism from fellow Democrats, including party leadership.
In response to the backlash, Jayapal issued a statement clarifying her position. She emphasized that she does not believe Israel as a nation is racist, but rather criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government for engaging in discriminatory and racist policies.
Despite her clarification, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations condemned Jayapal’s initial remarks, calling them false and evocative of antisemitic tropes.
On the other hand, progressive organization J Street applauded Jayapal’s statement, expressing support for her stance against discriminatory policies and harm to Israel’s democracy.
House Democrat leadership, while not directly addressing Jayapal, reaffirmed their support for Israel as a Jewish and Democratic nation. They emphasized the importance of the special relationship between the United States and Israel, as well as their commitment to a two-state solution.
