An Iowa man is currently behind bars after allegedly burglarizing a church rectory in Nebraska and fatally stabbing a priest on Sunday morning.
According to KETV, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office received a distress call from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun, just a few miles north of Omaha.
Upon arriving at the scene, deputies discovered 43-year-old Kierre L. Williams inside the church rectory, along with Father Stephen Gutgsell, who had been fatally stabbed.
The injured priest was immediately rushed to Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, but unfortunately succumbed to his wounds.
Williams was promptly apprehended and taken into custody at the Washington County Jail. He now faces charges of homicide and the use of a weapon to commit a felony.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a suspected motive for the attack on Gutgsell or for Williams’ alleged break-in.
Williams, a resident of Sioux City, Iowa, resides just across the Nebraska state line.
St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, part of the Archdiocese of Omaha, had to cancel its Sunday morning services. However, later in the evening, the pews were filled with mourners paying their respects to the late priest.
Rosemary Therkildsen, a member of the community, expressed her disbelief, saying, “It’s very difficult to believe that he’s not going to be in there when we walk in there today.”
Another woman described the murder as shocking, stating, “Just doesn’t feel real.”
A representative for Gutgsell released a statement to KETV, saying, ”The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, and there are no further details at this time. Please join Archbishop George Lucas in prayer for the repose of Father Gutgsell, for his family, and for the St. John the Baptist parish community in this tragic time.”
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an investigation into the priest’s death. However, they have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
