Prince Harry to receive Pat Tillman Award at ESPYS – Washington Examiner
Prince Harry will receive the Pat Tillman Award at the upcoming ESPYS for his work in founding the Invictus Games Foundation. The Pat Tillman Award is named in memory of the former Arizona Cardinals player, Pat Tillman, who died in Afghanistan in 2004 after enlisting in the army instead of continuing his football career. The award honors individuals who show strong commitment and service. Prince Harry, along with other honorees Steve Gleason and Dawn Staley, will be recognized at the event scheduled for July 11.
Prince Harry is set to receive The Pat Tillman Award at next month’s ESPYS, where he’ll be honored for founding the Invictus Games Foundation.
The Pat Tillman Award was named after and created in honor of the former Arizona Cardinals player who was killed in Afghanistan in 2004. Tillman chose not to sign a contract with the Cardinals football team and instead enlisted in the army, where he died from friendly fire.
“It’s our privilege to recognize three incredible individuals – Steve Gleason, Dawn Staley, and Prince Harry,” Kate Jackson, vice president of production at ESPN, said. “These honorees have used their platforms to change the world and make it more inclusive for marginalized and suffering communities, demonstrating incredible resilience, positivity, and perseverance, and we’re thrilled to celebrate them at The 2024 ESPYS.”
Prince Harry’s work with the Invictus Games Foundation, which is a multi-sports event for wounded, injured, or sick servicemen and servicewomen, began after he served 10 years in the British Armed Forces, including two tours in Afghanistan. He was inspired to create the games to bring attention to the men and women who serve their countries.
Previous recipients of the Pat Tillman Award include English soccer player Marcus Rashford in 2021, U.S. veteran Gretchen Evans in 2022, and the Buffalo Bills training staff in 2023.

The ESPYS award show will air on ABC on July 11, with tennis legend Serena Williams serving as host.
Prince Harry’s receiving of the Pat Tillman Award comes after it was revealed in April that he named the United States his primary residence, four years after he moved out of the United Kingdom. King Charles III evicted Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, from Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, England, last year.
