Pro golfer admits cheating to qualify for tournament.
A Golfer’s Confession: Cheating to Improve His Score
In a shocking turn of events, a professional golfer has admitted to committing ”the biggest mistake” of his life during a PGA Tour Canada tournament last weekend. Justin Doeden, a 28-year-old from Minnesota, confessed on Monday that he cheated to improve his score, ensuring he made the cut for the final round.
Doeden’s deceitful act took place on the 18th hole of the Ottawa Open. He changed his score from a double bogey to a par, erasing his marked 7 and replacing it with a 5 after his playing partner had already signed the scorecard. This manipulation pushed Doeden within the cut line by one shot and eliminated 13 players from the tournament.
Taking to Twitter, Doeden wrote, “I am here to confess the biggest mistake I have made in my life to date. I cheated in golf. This is not who I am. I let my sponsors down. I let my competitors down. I let my family down. I let myself down. I pray for your forgiveness.”
Doeden concluded his tweet with a reference to the Bible verse 1 John 1:9, emphasizing the importance of confession and seeking forgiveness.
Uncovering the Cheating Scandal
The cheating scandal came to light when two players noticed a discrepancy in Doeden’s score. While having lunch, they realized that Doeden was listed as 3-under on the leaderboard, but one of the players who had played with him remembered that Doeden finished with a double bogey, putting him at 1-under. Suspecting foul play, the players alerted tournament officials.
Upon investigation, officials discovered that Doeden had indeed altered his scorecard. His score of 7 had been erased and replaced with a 5. As a result, Doeden withdrew from the tournament while officials further examined the situation.
Doeden, who turned pro in 2018, has played in numerous tournaments on PGA Tour Canada and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. When questioned about potential disciplinary action, PGA Tour Canada stated that “the matter — and any related disciplinary action — will be handled internally.”
