The America First Legal Foundation, a conservative public interest group based in Washington, is launching an investigation into any records President Joe Biden’s administration may have on Ryan Wesley Routh, who is the suspect in custody after being allegedly involved with former President Donald Trump’s “apparent assassination attempt.”

On Sunday, Trump was the target of an “apparent assassination attempt,” in which Routh was allegedly hiding in a covered area with a rifle and scope near Trump’s Florida golf course, according to the FBI. Routh did not fire the gun and was not in range to strike the former president, according to the Associated Press.

“In just a few months, the American people witnessed two assassination attempts of former President Donald Trump. Undoubtedly, based on public reporting about the attempted assassin in Florida, the Biden-Harris government has records that the American public is entitled to see,” Gene Hamilton, America First Legal’s executive director, said in a statement.

In the days after the events unfolded on Trump’s golf course, Routh’s strong pro-Ukrainian feelings as the country struggles in a war with Russia have been revealed. He was critical of Ukraine for having strict regulations around admitting foreign soldiers to fight in the war as he voiced support for Afghan veterans fighting for Ukraine.

“It is highly abnormal for an individual to travel to an active war zone — in this case, Ukraine — and then try to recruit other citizens to fight on behalf of a foreign nation without someone knowing something. We are committed to quickly exposing what the U.S. government knew about this individual,” the statement continued.

Routh has a long criminal history, including a record of violence, and at one point, he appears to have self-published a book that told Iran, “You are free to assassinate Trump.”

In Ukraine’s Unwinnable War, Routh described Trump as a “fool” and a “buffoon” for both the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and the “tremendous blunder” of leaving the Iran nuclear deal, according to the news report.

For these reasons, the organization believes Routh was on the government’s radar.

“Given Routh’s criminal history and Ukrainian activities, there is reason to believe that he has been an individual of concern to the U.S. government,” the America First Legal Foundation said in a press release.

The group is seeking information from the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, the Transportation Security Administration, the DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis, the Department of Justice, the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the Agency for International Development, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Routh is now in custody on two gun charges. The first alleges that he illegally owned his gun despite being convicted of multiple felony convictions in North Carolina. The second charge alleges that the weapon’s serial number was obliterated and unreadable to the naked eye, which is a violation of federal law.
