Progressive Democrats join MTG to visit Jan. 6 defendants in DC jail

Two progressive Democrats are planning to join Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) as she leads a group of House lawmakers to visit a jail in Washington, D.C., where several Jan. 6 defendants are being held.

According to Axios, Freshman Reps. Jasmine Crockett( D-TX ) and Summer Lee, D-PA, intend to join the congressional delegation as they work to strike an ideological balance with Friday’s visit. The two stressed that their presence was intended to highlight broader issues of prison reform rather than to support Greene’s efforts to portray Jan. 6 accused as” political captives.”

Republicans’ attempts to downplay the perilous realities of January 6 will be exposed by” Crockett and Lee ,” according to a House Oversight Democrats spokesperson. The trip is nothing more than Speaker McCarthy fulfilling his promise to give serious Democrat voices control of the Committee.

The journey comes shortly after James Comer, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, and Greene sent a notice to Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser asking for exposure to the city jails where many protesters detained in connection with the Capitol riot are being held.

As of March 13, at least 20 Jan. 6 defendants were detained in Washington penitentiary services, according to a list provided by the city Department of Corrections. Six of the seventeen individuals who have already entered guilty pleas to the cost of assaulting law enforcement officers. On abuse prices, two more people have already been found guilty.

Greene has long made it a top concern to protect those detained in connection with the riot at the Capitol and to draw attention to the treatment she believes is cruel there.

” Eyewitness accounts of the conditions at the DC Jail Facilities— particularly in regards to how the January 6 detainees were treated — show desperation, hopelessness, and a serious abuse of justice.” In their notice dated March 9, Greene and Comer stated that” no slave in the United States should be treated in this manner.” Reports that January 6 prisoners are experiencing a special type of abuse because of their politics and ideas, which could result in numerous human rights violations, worry the Committee.

Alejandro Mayorkas is to be removed as Homeland Security Secretary, according to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, at a press conference on Capitol Hill on February 1, 2023, in Washington.

In November 2021, Greene paid a visit to prisoners housed in the Washington prison before publishing what she referred to as” testimony of abuse and neglect.”

The visit coincides with Republicans refocusing on the riot of January 6 and using their original majority in the House to change the narrative that Democrats have basically controlled for the past two years. The mother of Ashli Babbitt, who was shot and killed by a Capitol Police officer as she attempted to enter the speaker’s lobby during the riot, met with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy( R – CA ) on Thursday.

Additionally, House Republicans are getting ready to release the results of their own inspection from January 6. According to Politico, Rep. Barry Loudermilk( R-GA ) stated that he intends to release the preliminary findings of his investigation into the Democratic-led Jan. 6 committee as soon as Tuesday.
