Progressive Dems propose ceasefire to end Israel-Hamas conflict.
Progressive House Democrats Call for Ceasefire in Israel-Gaza Conflict
A resolution has been introduced by progressive House Democrats urging President Joe Biden to take immediate action and call for de-escalation and a ceasefire to halt the ongoing fighting in Israel and Gaza.
Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) submitted the resolution just over a week after members of the Hamas terrorist group breached the Israel-Gaza barrier on Oct. 7 and carried out a devastating attack in southern Israel, resulting in the loss of countless lives. The situation has escalated with Israeli forces conducting airstrikes on Hamas positions in Gaza, leading to a significant number of casualties.
Expressing her grief for the lives lost, Rep. Bush emphasized the need for peace and justice, stating, “War and retaliatory violence doesn’t achieve accountability or justice; it only leads to more death and human suffering.”
The ceasefire resolution has garnered support from members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, including Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), André Carson (D-Ind.), Summer Lee (D-Pa.), Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.), Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.), Jesús “Chuy” García (D-Ill.), Jonathan Jackson (D-Ill.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), and Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.).
In response to the Hamas attacks, President Biden pledged increased military assistance to Israel. The United States has also deployed additional military resources to the region to deter further attacks on Israel.
While Israeli forces have conducted airstrikes on Hamas positions, preparations for a potential ground offensive in Gaza have been underway. Both the U.S. and Israeli governments have designated Hamas as a terrorist organization, with President Biden expressing support for eliminating the group. However, the supporters of the ceasefire resolution believe that peace should be pursued instead of further military action.
Alongside the call for a ceasefire, the resolution also emphasizes the need for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, as Israel has maintained control over essential supplies into the area. The situation in Gaza has resulted in a significant number of casualties and displaced a large portion of the population.
Rep. Carson condemned the violence and highlighted the vulnerability of Gaza’s civilian residents, stating, “The answer to violence is not more violence. The answer is not military response and more killing of innocent children and women.”
Speakership Vote Impacts US Legislative Responses
The progress of the ceasefire resolution may be influenced by the upcoming election of a new speaker of the House. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is currently seeking support for his bid for the speakership and has already expressed his support for Israel’s military response.
As the conflict continues, it remains to be seen how the House will respond to the resolution and the ongoing situation in Israel and Gaza.
