Country music singer Maren Morris is reportedly breaking free from her country music roots to explore new horizons.
Morris, 33, made the surprising revelation in a recent interview, expressing her desire to move on from the genre that made her famous, especially in the “post-Trump era.”
Known for her progressive beliefs, Morris has been vocal about her ideologies, which have caused her to feel isolated within the country music world.
According to Morris, the issues within the industry have become more pronounced since Donald Trump’s presidency, exposing people’s biases and celebrating negative traits like misogyny, racism, homophobia, and transphobia.
“It just revealed who people really were and that they were proud to be misogynistic and racist and homophobic and transphobic. All these things were being celebrated, and it was weirdly dovetailing with this hyper-masculine branch of country music,” she asserted.
In 2016, Morris gained fame with her album “Hero,” reaching No. 5 on the Billboard 200. Her latest EP, “The Bridge,” serves as a glimpse into her new musical journey and reflects her sentiments about the country music world.
The EP features two tracks, “The Tree” and “Get the Hell Out of Here.”
These songs delve into her strained relationship with Nashville and country music as a whole, with lyrics like “I’m done fillin’ a cup with a hole in the bottom, I’m takin’ an axe to the tree.”
“These songs are obviously the result of that — the aftermath of walking away from something that was really important to you and the betrayal that you felt very righteously,” Morris said. “But also knowing there’s a thread of hope as you get to the other side.”
“The Bridge” provides a sneak peek into Morris’ upcoming studio album, which she is currently working on with renowned producer Jack Antonoff.
