Promise to Impeach Mayorkas Fizzles
Matt Gaetz, a Florida Rep., says that he and his fellow House Republicans don’t have enough votes to fulfill their 2022 campaign promise to impeach Homeland security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. They consider Mayorkas’ failure to uphold his oath in causing the border crisis.
“We don’t have the votes,” Gaetz stated Monday that The Washington Times reported.
“I don’t think we’re close to having the votes,” Gaetz responded when further questions were raised.
Mayorkas has been the subject of several impeachment proceedings by the Republican Congressmen. They claim that the Biden administration’s policy has led to a record number and number of migrants crossing the border at the southwest U.S. border, and that Mayorkas and others have failed to do enough to address these problems.
Mayorkas acknowledged that there are border problems, but he argues they are part and parcel of the global immigration problem. He has dismissed calls for impeachment and said he is focused on his job.
