Hunter Biden to be indicted by prosecutors this month.
U.S. Prosecutors to Seek Indictment of Hunter Biden
In a court filing on Wednesday, U.S. prosecutors announced their intention to seek an indictment of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, by September 29th in his tax and firearms case.
David Weiss, the U.S. special counsel appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, stated in the filing that the government would pursue a grand jury indictment before the Speedy Trial Act deadline.
An attorney for Hunter Biden has not yet responded to the request for comment.
“The government intends to seek the return of an indictment in this case before that date,” wrote Weiss in a status report to U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika.
In July, Noreika rejected a proposed plea deal that aimed to resolve the tax and gun charges, citing concerns over its legality and the extent of immunity it offered Hunter Biden.
Hunter Biden’s lawyers claimed in court filings last month that prosecutors had backed out of the plea deal, raising the possibility of a criminal trial as the 2024 presidential election approaches.
Under the proposed plea arrangement, Hunter Biden would have admitted guilt for not paying taxes on $1.5 million in income between 2017 and 2018. Additionally, he would have entered into a separate deferred prosecution agreement for the felony charge of illegally owning a firearm while using drugs.
This case has become a political lightning rod, with Republicans in Congress suggesting the impeachment of Biden over his son’s business dealings and accusing the Department of Justice of granting him a “sweetheart deal.”
Attorney General Garland has denied these Republican allegations of favoritism and has elevated Weiss, who has been investigating the case since 2019, to the position of U.S. special counsel.
If the case proceeds to trial, President Biden would be campaigning for reelection in November 2024, likely against former President Donald Trump, while his son faces criminal prosecution.
Trump, a Republican, is also facing at least three criminal trials of his own next year.
