Anti-Trump group to hold three-day protest to disrupt election certification

A planned protest near the Capitol this weekend will attempt to discourage Congress from certifying the election for President-elect Donald Trump.

Next week, Congress is expected to certify the 2024 election, in which Trump won the popular vote and 312 electoral votes. In the three days leading up to Jan. 6 when lawmakers will vote on the election results, protesters are planning to convince them to give the election to Trump’s opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, who garnered fewer votes in 45 states and Washington, D.C., than her predecessor, President Joe Biden.

The movement, called 14th Now, is named after the third section of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits those who “have engaged in insurrection or rebellion” from holding political office. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court ruled in Trump’s favor in determining that Trump had not violated this amendment in his actions on Jan. 6, 2021.

“Congress! Honor your oath to the 14th amendment,” one downloadable sign reads. “Say no to a disqualified, adjudicated insurrectionist.”

Protesters will gather near the southwest side of Union Station the first day, at the Supreme Court steps the second day, and between the Capitol and the Supreme Court on the final day, just before the certification vote. This protest will likely affect traffic in the area.
