Psaki touts ‘major sign of generational change’ for Democrats as party battles for leadership

MSNBC anchor Jen Psaki predicted a “generational change” within the House of Representatives‘s Democratic leadership.

Psaki noted the various members shaking up the leadership across House committees in her most recent opinion editorial. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is jockeying for the ranking member spot of the House Oversight Committee. Additionally, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) resigned from the top Democratic position on the House Judiciary Committee to endorse Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), even though Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) is also in the running. Rep. David Scott (D-GA) is also facing challengers for his spot as ranking member of the Agricultural Committee.

“House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has largely stayed silent through this process, which some have interpreted as a tacit endorsement of the challengers. Notably, this kind of shake-up is rare within the Democratic caucus. Unlike House Republicans, who have term limits for committee leadership roles, Democrats have traditionally prioritized seniority. But that tradition may be changing,” Psaki wrote.

“These leadership battles could be a major sign of generational change within the Democratic Party, and signal which voices will take the lead opposing the Trump administration’s agenda,” Psaki wrote.

The former White House press secretary quoted retiring Rep. Anne McLane Kuster (D-NH) when she suggested the Democratic Party “could do a better job with elevating some of our younger members who have great experience. And [you should] not have to be in Congress for 30 years before you can have a meaningful role in leadership and on policy.”

This comes as the Democratic Party is also amid its change of Democratic National Committee Chair. Jaime Harrison is likely to be replaced by either Ben Wikler or Ken Martin who are the respective Democratic chairs of Wisconsin and Minnesota.
