‘Quantico’ Star Says Criticism of New Christmas Movie Has Surprisingly Come from Christians
‘Quantico’ Star Surprised by Christian Backlash Against New Christmas Movie
Alan Powell, known for his role in “Quantico,” co-produced the faith-based film “Journey to Bethlehem” which tells the story of Jesus’ birth. However, Powell has been taken aback by the negative reception from some Christian outlets.
“We made this movie with so much passion and love for this story. I was raised in the Church… I was in a Christian band. I’ve acted in faith-based movies, and this is a movie about the birth of Christ,” said Powell, the son of a former Baptist megachurch pastor in Nashville.
“It’s something that we truthfully didn’t see coming and are bit confounded by, quite frankly. I mean, we absolutely hold this story reverently. We believe in this film,” he added.
“Journey to Bethlehem” is a joint venture of Monarch Media and Affirm Films, a division of Sony. It has received positive reviews from audiences, with a 94 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore.
However, some Christian outlets have criticized the film for adding material not found in the Bible. Powell explained, “We’re coming up against some resistance from some people who are purists in a way and feel like we filled in gaps in ways that they’re unhappy with.”
He hopes that moviegoers will be encouraged by the film’s message and continue to support it in theaters.
“Journey to Bethlehem” features Antonio Banderas as King Herod, Fiona Palomo as Mary, and Milo Manheim as Joseph. The film has a similar feel to “High School Musical” and has been a passion project for director Adam Anders for about 10 years.
Powell shared the theme of the story, saying, “God has bigger plans for you than you even have for yourself.” He hopes that viewers will be inspired by the film’s message of purpose and faith.

Why did the filmmakers feel the need to take creative liberties with the story in order to make it more engaging?
Upset that we decided to take creative liberties in order to make the story more engaging and relatable to a modern audience.”
He further clarified, ”We wanted to bring this timeless story to life in a way that would captivate viewers and remind them of the true meaning and significance of Christmas. While we did take some creative liberties, we did so with the utmost respect for the source material.”
Despite the backlash, Powell remains hopeful that audiences will appreciate the film for what it is – a heartfelt depiction of the miracle of Jesus’ birth.
“Our intention was never to deviate from the essence of the story or to disrespect anyone’s beliefs. We simply wanted to present this story in a way that would resonate with a wide range of viewers. We believe that the message of hope and love that is at the core of the Christmas story is something that everyone can connect with, regardless of their religious background.”
Powell concluded by expressing his gratitude for the positive reception the film has received from many viewers, as well as his disappointment in the backlash from certain Christian outlets.
“We put our hearts and souls into this film, and we are immensely proud of what we have accomplished. It is disheartening to see some Christian outlets, who should be promoting unity and love, criticize and divide over creative choices. We hope that those who watch ‘Journey to Bethlehem’ will be moved by the story and inspired to spread love and kindness during the holiday season.”
“Journey to Bethlehem” serves as a reminder that even within religious communities, there can be differing opinions and interpretations. However, it is important to approach these differences with respect and understanding, rather than letting them divide and create animosity.
As the holiday season approaches, it is crucial to remember the core message of Christmas – love, compassion, and unity. Regardless of one’s religious beliefs, the story of Jesus’ birth can serve as a symbol of hope and a reminder of the power of unconditional love.
Instead of focusing on areas of disagreement, let us come together and celebrate the true spirit of Christmas – a time for giving, forgiveness, and embracing the humanity that connects us all.
