Phoenix to fund ‘queer’ middle school with taxpayer vouchers.
A New Arizona Middle School for “Queer” Children to Open This Summer
A groundbreaking new middle school in Arizona is set to open its doors this summer, providing a safe and inclusive learning environment for “queer” children. What makes this even more remarkable is that the school will be funded by taxpayers through Arizona’s education vouchers.
The Queer Blended Learning Center, located in downtown Phoenix, is a project of One•n•ten, an LGBT youth activist nonprofit. The school will be housed at One•n•ten’s Phoenix headquarters, ensuring a supportive and nurturing atmosphere for its students.
One of the most exciting aspects of this school is that students do not have to identify as LGBT to enroll. The mission of One•n•ten is to serve LGBTQ youth and young adults aged 11-24, enhancing their lives through empowering social and service programs that promote self-expression, self-acceptance, leadership development, and healthy life choices.
A Safe Space for Exceptional Education
“We just had this population of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders that could really benefit from a safe space to be able to have exceptional education while also exploring their own identity,” said Clayton Davenport, One•n•ten’s director of development and marketing.
The school was established in response to what One•n•ten CEO Nate Rhoton describes as legislative and cultural “attacks” on LGBT youth. It aims to provide a comprehensive education that not only covers traditional subjects like science, math, and reading but also highlights LGBT history and perspectives.
Using a curriculum developed by the New York City education department, students will have the opportunity to learn about LGBT history every day. The curriculum is designed to be culturally responsive, ensuring that stories from every perspective and point of view are shared.
Inclusive Facilities and Affordable Tuition
The school will feature single-stall restrooms instead of gender-specific facilities, creating a more inclusive environment for all students.
Importantly, families will not have to bear any out-of-pocket costs for tuition. Thanks to Arizona’s school voucher program, the tuition will be covered entirely by the vouchers.
Arizona expanded its school voucher program last summer, allowing every student in the state to receive a taxpayer-funded Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) to attend a private school. This program has been immensely popular, with over a million K-12 public school students now eligible for an ESA account.
As Arizona continues to lead the way in school choice, the opening of this “queer” middle school demonstrates the commitment to providing education options that meet the diverse needs of students. Similar schools have also been launched in Atlanta, and plans are underway for another in Las Vegas.
