How do scholars believe the story of Gilgamesh was transmitted and preserved before being written down on clay tablets, and what significance does this oral tradition hold for the overall narrative
The Epic of Gilgamesh is believed to be the oldest recorded piece of Western literature. It is an ancient Mesopotamian tale about the hero Gilgamesh, who embarks on a quest for immortality. The story explores themes of friendship, mortality, and the nature of humanity. Scholars believe that Gilgamesh was a king who lived in ancient Mesopotamia around 2700 BCE, and his story was passed down orally before being written down on clay tablets around 1900 BCE. The epic consists of 12 tablets, with each tablet containing a separate adventure of Gilgamesh. It has had a major influence on subsequent works of literature, including the biblical story of Noah and the flood.
