US Open disrupted by radical environmental protesters now facing criminal charges.
Protesters Face Criminal Charges for Disrupting US Open Match
Two protesters who made headlines for their disruptive actions during a semi-final match at the US Open are now facing criminal charges. Gregory Schwedock and Sayak Mukhopadhyay were charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct after their environmental protest caused a 50-minute delay in the game.
The Protest
During the match between Coco Gauff and Karolína Muchová, Schwedock, Mukhopadhyay, and another protester stood up and shouted “end fossil fuels.” Their actions caught the attention of the New York City Police, who responded to reports of disorderly behavior.
“Personnel from the Emergency Service Unit responded and were able to safely free the male and take him into custody,” police said.
Raising Awareness for an Existential Threat
Mukhopadhyay later explained that the protest aimed to raise awareness about the existential threat posed by climate change. He stated, “There is no tennis on a dead planet. There is no art on a dead planet. Everything that we take for granted as our way of life will cease to exist.”
Player’s Response
Although the protest caused a delay in the match, Coco Gauff expressed understanding and support for the protesters. She said, “I always speak about preaching about what you feel and what you believe in. It was done in a peaceful way, so I can’t get too mad at it.”
Despite the disruption, Gauff went on to win the match 6-4, 7-5, while the crowd booed the protesters and shouted insults as they were taken away by the police.
Extinction Rebellion’s Involvement
The radical environmentalist group, Extinction Rebellion, claimed responsibility for the protest. They stated that the action aimed to highlight the neglect of the climate and ecological breakdown by governments and corporations.
“The group emphasizes that the present socioeconomic system can’t protect people from the crises to come because its very structure creates these crises and then ignores them,” the group said.
