A Minnesota-based electric utility company announced Thursday that it had spilled more than 400,000 gallons worth of radioactive liquid from its unit last year.
According to the utility, which is based in Minneapolis, it was reported that Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant had leaked tritium-containing water. “pose[d] no health and safety concern to the local people or the environment.” Xcel Energy said that monitoring had shown that the leaking water was being filtered. “completely confined on-site” They were not found in any drinking water nearby.
A statement was released by the President of Xcel Energy, Minnesota and South Dakota.
“While this leak does not pose a risk to the public or the environment, we take this very seriously and are working to safely address the situation,” Clark stated.
The leak was discovered by the Monticello power plant’s groundwater monitoring system in November. It was caused by a conduit connecting two buildings. It has been draining groundwater contaminated with tritium below the legal limit, treating it and storing it.
Xcel notified federal and state officials about the tritium water leak late November. However, the spillage was not made public until Thursday.
“If at any point there had been concern for the public safety, we would of course, immediately have provided more information,” Chris Clark, president at Xcel Energy -Minnesota and South Dakota, stated. “But we also wanted to make sure we fully understood what was going on before we started raising any concerns with the public around us.”
According to the Minnesota Department of Health, the Mississippi River was not affected. Xcel also stated that it had recovered approximately 25% of the tritium that was spilled so far and that its recovery efforts will continue. It will also install a permanent solution in spring.
Japan is about to release large quantities of radioactive effluent clean into the ocean. The water contains tritium, along with other radioactive pollutants, after the triple reactor meltdowns that occurred at Fukushima daiichi’s nuclear power plant twelve year ago.
