Ramaswamy’s wake-up call to Gen Z and millennials: ditch the ‘victimhood’.
Entrepreneur and Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy Gives Wake-Up Call to Gen Z and Millennials
During an interview with the crew of Timcast IRL, Vivek Ramaswamy, a 2024 presidential candidate, delivered a powerful message to young people, emphasizing that while hardship is inevitable, victimhood is a choice.
“Hardship is not a choice in life,” Ramaswamy stated. “Hardship is something that happens to you.”
Lessons Learned from Personal Experience
Ramaswamy shared the story of his father, who faced numerous hardships in his life and the valuable lessons he learned from them.
“What did he do? He went to night school and law school,” Ramaswamy recounted. “I was in sixth grade, I used to go with him and sit with him in the back of the classroom because we didn’t have child care or anything else.”
Witnessing his father’s dedication to work and education left a lasting impression on Ramaswamy, shaping his own approach to overcoming challenges, especially during the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.
“I remembered the example my parents set,” he reflected. “Hardship is something that happens to you. It’s not something you choose, but victimhood is a choice. We choose to be victims.”
“You don’t choose your hardship, but you do choose victimhood. You can choose not to be a victim, and hardship is not the same thing as victimhood.”
Ramaswamy acknowledged the existence of legitimate grievances that many millennials and Gen Z members face as they grow up.
“For most of human history, people from all walks of life have had grievances they could latch onto. However, I believe that a significant factor contributing to the self-loathing we see today is a deeper psychic insecurity,” he explained.
“We’re actually afraid of trying to realize our full potential because if we fail, we’re afraid of that failure.”
It is crucial for young individuals to recognize that while hardships may come their way, they have the power to choose their response and refuse to be defined by victimhood.
