Sen. Rand Paul Calls for Investigation into Dr. Fauci’s Alleged Perjury
Sen. Rand Paul is demanding an investigation into Dr. Anthony Fauci after newly-released emails from 2020 revealed that Fauci admitted scientists at Wuhan University were conducting gain-of-function experiments. The Kentucky Republican wrote to Attorney General Merrick Garland, accusing Fauci of perjury for denying funding of such research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Fauci’s Controversial Statements
During a Senate committee hearing in July 2021, Fauci claimed that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) had never funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan. However, the 2020 email from Fauci tells a different story. In the email, Fauci expressed concerns about unusual mutations in the virus and mentioned that scientists at Wuhan University were known to be working on gain-of-function experiments.
Evidence Supporting Paul’s Claims
Richard Ebright, a professor at Rutgers University, stated that documents released by The Intercept provided unequivocal proof that NIH grants were used to fund gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Additionally, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) confirmed that the Wuhan Institute of Virology and Wuhan University did receive NIH funding.
GAO Report and Fauci’s Contradictions
The GAO report revealed that NIH funded projects at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and Wuhan University, including genetic experiments involving bat coronaviruses and collaboration on viral detection. Despite this evidence, Fauci maintained that gain-of-function research was solely conducted by Dr. Shi Zhengli at the Wuhan Institute.
With mounting evidence and conflicting statements, Sen. Rand Paul is pushing for a thorough investigation into Dr. Fauci’s alleged perjury and the funding of gain-of-function research in Wuhan.
