Rand Paul cautions against individual warfare tactics – Washington Examiner
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) recently expressed concerns regarding the implications of individual-target attacks in modern warfare during an appearance on Fox Business’s *Mornings with Maria Bartiromo*. He highlighted that recent incidents, such as a coordinated attack on Hezbollah in Lebanon that resulted in civilian casualties, raise serious questions about overall safety. Paul criticized the evolving nature of warfare, where advanced technology allows for targeted strikes on individuals through drones and other means, suggesting that this could lead to a global environment where no one feels secure. He emphasized the risk of collateral damage in these operations, which might foster additional terrorism and perpetuate cycles of violence. Paul acknowledged the complexities of targeting perceived terrorists while managing the broader impacts on civilian populations.
Rand Paul cautions individual warfare tactics will raise danger globally
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) warned that attacking people “individually” in warfare could have serious consequences, specifically on civilian safety.
Paul made the comment regarding a seemingly coordinated attack on Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon, in which at least one child was among 12 people who died. Hezbollah has blamed Israel for the attack, which has also left at least 2,800 people injured. Israeli military officials have declined to comment.
“If these were terrorists, it’s hard to have a lot of sympathy for them, but I do think that as warfare gets to the point where we attack people individually with drones or pagers, we’re going to live in a world where nobody is safe anywhere,” Paul said on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria Bartiromo. “I mean, where no person can be safe giving a speech, that a drone might attack them. We have $300 drones that can take out a $300 million tank now, so the next stage in warfare is this individual warfare.”
Paul also warned about the collateral damage that can occur when killing terrorists, which could potentially create more terrorists and create “a never-ending type of cycle.” The Kentucky senator reiterated that while the Hamas attack on Israel that occurred on Oct. 7, 2023, was “a horrific massacre,” it is important to discuss the future of Gaza and whether there can be an international port to improve its economic status.
“This isn’t because I have any sympathy for Hamas, because I don’t want Hamas to continue,” Paul said. “You have to somehow encourage or allow some kind of economic opportunity in these areas, and really, frankly, the Arab countries surrounding Gaza have an obligation to try to make it a safer place and to have somebody to deal with other than Hamas.”
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Tuesday that the United States was not informed ahead of time about the attack and that officials are still gathering information.
A second round of electronic communication device explosions occurred Wednesday, this time with Hezbollah walkie-talkies.
