Rand Paul: Masks On Planes ‘Theater,’ Plans To Force Vote To End Mandate

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul (R) said that he plans to force a vote to end the mask mandate on airlines, saying that there is “no science” behind it and “no reason” to continue.

Appearing with former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Newsmax’s “Spicer and Co.” Tuesday evening, Paul was asked about efforts to pass a bill to temporarily fund the government before funding runs out on Friday. Co-host Lindsey Keith pointed out that Paul is one of six Republican Senators who signed a letter refusing to pass a Continuing Resolution on an expedited basis unless the Senate allows a vote on an amendment defunding enforcement of the Biden administration’s remaining vaccine mandates for federal employees and medical workers. Keith then asked Paul to comment on the efforts.

“Now this should not shock you, the government is going to run out of money, again,” said Paul. “The government is always running out of money, because we’re perpetually spending more than comes in. So yes, there will be another deadline.” Paul pointed out that he had previously proposed a legislative concept he called a “shutdown prevention bill,” which would decrease government spending by 1% every 90 days if Congress fails to pass a budget resolution before funding expires. Paul argued that his idea would be good for the country because it would actually lead to “real cuts,” which would compel Congress to “scamper around and immediately pass more bills.”

Paul then shifted to the topic of mandates specifically. “Now what we’ve said [in regard to] the vaccine mandates is, we’re sick and tired of the government mandating our behavior and taking our liberty away, and I’m as mad as the Canadian truckers are. I want to end,” Paul said. “There’s no science behind these mask mandates, we’re just punishing our children, let’s end it.”

“Now, it’s beginning to unravel,” Paul continued, pointing to the fact that a number of Democratic Governors are beginning to “back away” from their statewide mask mandates. “But we need to push from here in Washington [D.C.].” He then announced that he was gathering signatures from fellow lawmakers to force a repeal of the federal regulation mandating masks to be worn on airlines. “You know, cloth masks don’t work, the virus goes through the cloth mask and around the cloth mask. It’s a joke, it’s theater, and there’s no reason to be wearing them on the planes. we are just punishing ourselves. And I, for one, I’m tired of paying the airlines to be treated like crap when I get on the plane.”

“I want to be treated like a paying customer, and I want them to bring me at least a glass of water and peanuts, and I don’t want somebody jammering at me to put my mask on in between peanuts,” Paul joked, eliciting a laugh from Spicer. “I mean, for goodness’ sakes, I’m paying you money, treat me like a customer. So I’m tired of it.”

“Then they hide behind this federal law, saying, ‘Oh the federal law makes us do this,’” he added. “Only because the airlines begged the federal government for the federal law so they could hide behind. So let’s get rid of it. I’m gonna force a vote on it, we’ll see where the Democrats are, but I think the people are like me, fed up and tired of all these regulations and mandates.”
