Study suggests refined carbs may lower cognitive function.

Is Your Favorite Pastry Making You Dumb?

According to a new study out of France, consuming refined carbohydrates can lead to lower cognitive function. The study, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, examined the relationship between carb consumption and cognitive performance in 95 healthy young adults between 20 and 30. The results showed negative impacts on cognition for both genders, with high glycemic index foods, such as white bread and ultra-processed foods, being the main culprits.

This study is just one of many recent ones that have found a significant relationship between diet and brain health. A study from Brazil last year surveyed nearly 11,000 adults and found a correlation between an ultra-processed diet and lower cognitive function. And in January, scientists at Montreal’s McGill University found a link between obesity and Alzheimer’s disease.

“Our study strengthens previous literature pointing to obesity as a significant factor in [Alzheimer’s Disease] by showing that cortical thinning might be one of the potential risk mechanisms,” said Filip Morys, a Ph.D. researcher and lead author of the study. “Our results highlight the importance of decreasing weight in obese and overweight individuals in mid-life, to decrease the subsequent risk of neurodegeneration and dementia.”

Ultra-processed diets are not only linked to obesity but also to depressive symptoms and shorter lifespans. So, if you want to keep your brain healthy and functioning at its best, it might be time to ditch the pastries and opt for healthier options.
