Tennessee lawmaker Justin Jones raises $1.1 million after reinstatement.
Tennessee Democratic State Rep. Justin Jones Raises $1.1 Million Following Public Expulsion
Tennessee Democratic state Rep. Justin Jones has made waves this year, both in the state House and in his fundraising efforts. After being publicly expelled earlier in the year, Jones has managed to raise an impressive $1.1 million.
Jones was booted from the state House along with Democratic state Rep. Justin Pearson in April for their use of a bullhorn to call attention to stricter restrictions on firearms in a breach of decorum. A unanimous vote the next week reinstated them, but it was also in the interim that Jones raised the majority of the money per a report. When combined with Pearson, the pair have raised over $2 million.
What’s even more remarkable is that the majority of Jones’s funds came from outside of Tennessee. It seems that his expulsion, despite its negative consequences, turned out to be a financial boon for him.
Jones’s Social Media Influence
On Twitter, Jones boasts an impressive following of over 307,000 followers. In contrast, Republican Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton, who has held the position since 2019, has a mere 11,000 followers.
Commitment to Gun Law Reform
Tennessee has a cap on the number of bills members can file, and this cap was renewed for Jones upon his reinstatement. However, he has made a commitment to make the most of it by filing all 15 of his maximum bills toward “commonsense gun laws.”
Concerning Statistics
Last year, Tennessee experienced a staggering 17 mass shootings, resulting in 14 reported deaths. These alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for action.
Jones, a first-term representative, took over the seat of Democratic state Rep. Mike Stewart, who served only one term. With no other Democratic candidates emerging during the primary election on June 15, Jones is set to face off against Republican opponent Laura Nelson on Aug. 3.
