Rep. Phillips urges Democrats to challenge Biden in 2024 following special counsel appointment.
Rep. Dean Phillips Calls for Primary Challenge to President Biden in 2024
Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) is making waves with his renewed calls for President Joe Biden to face a primary challenge in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Phillips believes that the recent appointment of a special counsel to investigate Biden’s son, Hunter, warrants a closer look at the Democratic candidates.
Speaking on CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper, Phillips emphasized that many Democrats and independents are dissatisfied with the current options in the Democratic primary. He expressed concern that the unpopularity of the candidates could jeopardize the party’s chances of retaining the White House.
Phillips’ Urgent Message to Democrats
“It’s not about me. This is about a message and a wake-up call that I am trying my darnedest to deliver to Democrats,” Phillips stated. “Before today’s news, 55% of Democrats wanted an alternative to the three primary candidates. Independents, on the other hand, were at 73%. Even moderate Republicans who oppose Trump are seeking an alternative. We need to listen to these numbers.”
Phillips clarified that his call for a primary challenge to Biden is not rooted in disdain for the president. In fact, he expressed admiration for Biden’s record and personal qualities. However, he believes that the polling numbers among all groups indicate a need for a fresh alternative.
“I am scared. I’m trying to raise that bell, be the clearing call if you will,” Phillips continued. “I’m not the best positioned to do this. There are plenty of well-prepared, competent individuals of great character ready to step up.”
Concerns Over Hunter Biden Investigation
Phillips also expressed his sadness over the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden. He worries that this investigation could potentially harm Joe Biden’s chances of winning the 2024 presidential election.
Currently, President Biden is expected to secure the Democratic nomination without significant opposition. According to RealClearPolitics, he holds a commanding lead over other Democratic contenders, such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson.
Notably, prominent figures like Govs. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) have chosen not to run in 2024 and have endorsed Biden for another term in the White House. At 80 years old, Biden is the oldest president in U.S. history.
