Rep. Dusty Johnson: Debt Ceiling Agreement a Win for Republicans.

Republican Representative Dusty Johnson Calls Debt Ceiling Agreement a “Big Win”

“I mean, this is going to cut non-defense and non-VA spending back to 2022 levels. That is a big get for Republicans. That’s what we had in Limit, Save, Grow, and it’s going to save $1.5 trillion over the course of the next ten years.”

During an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union,” Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD) expressed his excitement over the tentative debt ceiling agreement that Republicans have reached with Democrats. He called it a “big win” for the Republican Party, citing the significant cuts in non-defense and non-VA spending that will be made over the next ten years.

Johnson also highlighted the establishment of caps at one percent for six years, which will help slow the growth of spending. When asked about criticisms that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) “gave up too much and could have gotten more,” Johnson defended the agreement, stating that the overwhelming majority of conservative members support it.

The Main Street Caucus Supports the Deal

“I’m the head of a group of 75 pragmatic conservatives called the Main Street Caucus,” Johnson explained. “And so when we say conservatives are against it, I want to make it clear I don’t know a single one of the Main Street Caucus conservatives who isn’t voting for it.”

While acknowledging that some members of the House Freedom Caucus might be against the agreement, Johnson emphasized that many will still vote for it. He dismissed criticisms from “the most colorful conservatives” who didn’t vote for the previous Republican wish list, Limit, Save, Grow, stating that the overwhelming majority of Republicans in the conference will support the deal.
