Rep. Greg Murphy (R-NC) had a “successful” surgery on Tuesday after announcing his diagnosis of a skull tumor last week.

“Dr. Murphy underwent a successful 5-hour surgery today and is resting comfortably,” said Alexander Crane, communications director for Murphy. “He wants to thank everybody for their thoughts and prayers and to let everyone know he is working hard to recover so that he will get back to his job of serving the wonderful people of NC‘s 3rd District.”

“Sometimes doctors don’t make the best patients but he is going to try his best,” Crane added.

Murphy said on May 21 that the tumor, called a pituitary macroadenoma, was believed to be benign but required surgical removal due to the size and “subsequent ability to affect vital structures” of the brain.

“As a physician, I have, for the last 30 years, taken care of thousands and thousands of patients. It is now my turn to be one,” the congressman previously said, adding he has the “utmost faith in my physicians and surgeons” to remove the tumor.

The North Carolina Republican is serving his third term as representative of the state’s 3rd Congressional District. He is the only practicing surgeon in Congress, according to his member page.
