Rep. Greg Steube chides Democrats for ‘fearmongering’ over Supreme Court immunity decision

Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) rebuked President Joe Biden and other Democrats for their reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision on presidential immunity, arguing that they were using their “typical ploy” to mislead voters.

The Supreme Court ruled Monday in a 6-3 decision that former presidents are entitled to “presumptive immunity” for all “official acts,” complicating the legal battles against former President Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Biden claimed in a statement that this new ruling means a president “will no longer be constrained by the law,” and Steube accused the president of falsely warning voters that presidents can get away with criminal acts.

“It’s fearmongering by the Democrats,” Steube said on Fox & Friends. “It’s your typical ploy to try and make it all about Trump taking over the country and fearmongering the American people. And the American people are smarter than that. You see Trump’s poll numbers increase dramatically after each one of these indictments, and it’s because the American people see that Joe Biden has weaponized the court system and the DOJ to go after his political opponent, and finally the Supreme Court has had a case that has been able to reset the pendulum back to the law.”

Steube reiterated how Trump said his supporters would march to the Capitol “to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard” on Jan. 6, 2021. The congressman argued that Trump’s statement and the rally he held prior to the riot constituted official acts.

When asked about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) intent to file articles of impeachment in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling, Steube questioned the purpose of such an action, as the House of Representatives has a Republican majority. He also noted that removing a Supreme Court justice, which has never happened, would require a two-thirds majority of the Senate.

“This is the same group of people that for years now … have said they want to pack the court because they want to make it full of leftists that do the will of the Democratic Party,” Steube said.

The Supreme Court’s decision undercuts special counsel Jack Smith’s case on the former president. Alina Habba, a senior adviser to Trump’s super PAC, MAGA Inc., predicted that the trial is unlikely to be held before the 2024 election. She also reiterated comments from the former president’s campaign that the legal battles he is facing are “election interference at its finest.”

Before the court’s ruling, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) pointed out that police officers, judges, and prosecutors enjoy some level of immunity to perform their duties, which he said should also apply to the president. The statement was made as Vance is rumored to be on Trump’s short list of vice presidential candidates.
