Rep. Jayapal retracts statement calling Israel ‘racist’.
Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Backtracks on Israel Comments
Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) has sparked controversy with her recent comments about Israel. However, she has since clarified her statement.
During a speech at the annual conference for the progressive organization Netroots Nation, Jayapal referred to Israel as a “racist state.” She expressed her support for the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination, while also expressing concern about the diminishing possibility of a two-state solution.
After facing criticism from fellow Democrats, including party leadership, Jayapal issued a statement to clarify her remarks. She emphasized that she does not believe Israel as a nation is racist, but rather criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government for engaging in discriminatory and racist policies.
Despite her clarification, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations condemned Jayapal’s initial comments, calling them false and evocative of antisemitic tropes.
On the other hand, progressive organization J Street applauded Jayapal’s statement, highlighting the need to push back against discriminatory policies and support a secure and just future for Israelis and Palestinians.
House Democrat leadership, while not directly addressing Jayapal, reaffirmed their support for Israel as a Jewish and democratic nation. They emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Israel relationship and their commitment to a two-state solution.
Other House Democrats also expressed concern about Jayapal’s comments, with a draft statement circulating that rebuked her by name. However, Jayapal’s retraction was appreciated by some members.
