Rep. Jordan Expands Probe Into Manhattan DA Office, Seeks Info From Top Trump Prosecutor
Jim Jordan, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in Ohio, asked for documents and testimony from a top prosecutor in the Manhattan district attorney’s (‘s DA ) criminal case against Trump on April 7 to further his investigation into the indictment of former President Donald Trump.
Jordan specifically wrote a letter( pdf ) to Matthew Colangelo, senior counsel at the district attorney’s office’s and former Department of Justice ( DOJ ) attorney. The email is a part of the House GOP investigation into Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s office’s, where he is prosecuting Trump in New York.
Trump was charged with 34 misdemeanor counts of falsifying business information in connection with a quiet cash transaction to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in the weeks leading up to the 2016 presidential election on April 4 at the New York Supreme Court by Bragg’s position. Trump denies Daniels’ allegation that she had an encounter with him in 2006.
Trump has defended his sincerity by claiming that the situation is motivated by politics, a claim that many Republicans have repeated.
Jordan wrote to Colangelo,” You are truly situated to provide content that is pertinent and necessary to inform the Committee’s oversight’s and significant legislative changes.”
According to the email, Colangelo was hired by Bragg to” jump-start” his investigation into Trump because of his prior experience looking into the former president. For the DOJ and the New York Attorney General’s position, Colangelo has participated in additional Trump investigations.
” You had previously held senior positions in the New York Attorney General’s Office’s and the U.S. Department of Justice, both of which were involved in opposing President Trump investigations. We ask for your assistance with our lapse in your particular strength given your evolution working for law enforcement organizations that are pursuing President Trump and the public coverage surrounding your decision to work for the New York County District Attorney’s Office’s, Jordan wrote.
In Jordan’s letter, Colangelo is asked for details about Bragg hiring him as well as his” personal motivation for or interest in working” for the DA office.
The action was taken one time after Jordan subpoenad Mark Pomerantz, a former attorney at the district attorney’s position who resigned in February 2022 due to Bragg initially being reluctant to seek bringing charges against Trump.
In response to the subpoena, the Manhattan DA’s office’s branded the GOP investigation as an” abuse of power” that undermined an ongoing criminal investigation.
