Rep. Raskin likens modern times to The Tempest, saying “many devils reside here.”
Rep. Jamie Raskin Reflects on the Current Political Landscape
In a captivating interview on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) drew a striking parallel between the turbulent state of politics and Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, The Tempest.
Raskin, who had experienced a personal tragedy with the loss of his son just days before the Capitol riot, shared how this devastating event had shaped his perspective on modern-day politics.
A Glimpse into Raskin’s Mind
Psaki, aware of Raskin’s fondness for Shakespearean works, probed further, asking if any particular play resonated with him in these tumultuous times.
“Well, there’s a passage in The Tempest: ‘Hell is empty and all the devils are here.’ I’ve found myself contemplating that line quite often,” Raskin revealed. He went on to illustrate how technology, among other forces, can embody these metaphorical “devils.”
The Crossroads of Democracy and Oppression
Raskin delved deeper into the choices facing our generation. “Every era must confront this decision: Will the 21st century be defined by democracy, freedom, and the transformative power of technology to enhance human well-being? Or will it succumb to the manipulation of bullies, autocrats, and tyrants who seek to oppress?” he pondered. “The path we take is yet to be determined.”
As Raskin gears up for reelection in 2024, his poignant reflections serve as a reminder of the critical crossroads we find ourselves at as a society.
