New Florida State Attorney Reveals ‘100-Day Plan for Restoring Trust, Law, and Order’
Florida’s New State Attorney Aims to Crack Down on Crime and Offer Rehabilitation
Florida’s new state attorney for the 9th Judicial Circuit, Andrew Bain, has ambitious plans to tackle violent crime and provide rehabilitation for nonviolent offenders. With a steadfast dedication to fairness, justice, and accountability, State Attorney Bain aims to renew the public’s faith in the criminal justice system while ensuring safety for the Orange and Osceola community.
Controversial Change in Leadership
Mr. Bain was appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis on Aug. 9 to replace former State Attorney Monique Worrell. The announcement of her removal and his appointment sparked controversy and was made during an early morning news conference.
“State Attorney Bain is implementing a victim-first prosecution against violent crimes, drug trafficking, and major criminal offenses, with a focus on swift and just resolutions.”
According to a 40-page executive order released by Gov. DeSantis, Ms. Worrell was removed from office due to allegations of not enforcing the law and releasing a significant number of defendants without prosecution. This decision has been met with both support and criticism.
Prioritizing Public Trust and Safety
In his first 100 days, Mr. Bain has pledged to restore public trust through fairness, accountability, transparency, collaboration, and effective prosecution. He will prioritize prosecuting violent crimes such as murder, rape, and drug trafficking, while also reviewing dropped criminal cases involving major offenses.
Additionally, Mr. Bain’s office will focus on rehabilitation for nonviolent offenders through a “Second Chance Program.” This program aims to address underlying issues such as poverty, homelessness, mental health, hunger, and lack of job training, which contribute to criminal behavior.
Collaboration and Upholding the Rule of Law
Mr. Bain plans to enhance communication, coordination, and data-sharing with law enforcement agencies to combat criminal activities effectively. He emphasizes the importance of upholding the rule of law and the Constitution in his role as state attorney.
Elected to Not Prosecute
Ms. Worrell, the former state attorney, expressed her outrage at being removed from office by Gov. DeSantis. She described it as an attack on democracy and vowed to take legal steps to reverse the decision. During a press conference, she defended her record, stating that not prosecuting individuals was what the voters in Florida’s 9th Judicial Circuit wanted when they elected her.
However, critics pointed to specific cases, such as the release of a man accused of sexual battery on a minor who later shot two police officers. They argued that Ms. Worrell’s decisions had put public safety at risk.
Despite the controversy surrounding the change in leadership, State Attorney Bain remains committed to his vision of a fair and accountable criminal justice system that ensures the safety and well-being of the community.
