Report: Biden Told Obama He Is Running for a Second Term
President Joe Biden has informed former president Barack Obama he is running for a second term, according to sources who spoke with the Hill.
The two sources, who were familiar with the conversation between Biden and Obama, said the president believes he is the best candidate to defeat Trump a second time. Just weeks ago, Obama celebrated the passage of his signature 2010 health care bill, the Affordable Care Act, at the White House with Biden.
Democrats have expressed concern over Biden’s potential 2024 run. Nevada governor Steve Sisolak (D.) in February said Biden should reconsider running a second time, citing the toll a first term has taken on the president. Biden’s poll numbers have remained low since he took office, bottoming out for a second time this year at 33 percent last week.
Americans have also expressed concern over a second Biden term. In September, a majority of voters said he was “too old” to be commander in chief. Biden will turn 82 in November 2024. A Washington Free Beacon poll last year found a majority of voters in a contested Texas district were skeptical the president was mentally fit to serve.
Biden’s tenuous bid for reelection is complicated by members of his cabinet, such as Vice President Kamala Harris and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who have signaled they are ready to run in 2024.
Obama was not encouraging during Biden’s previous run. On the eve of the 2020 campaign, he reportedly told one Democrat, “Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to fuck things up.”
