Report: Pixar Reinstates Same-Sex Kiss In ‘Lightyear’ Film Over So-Called ‘Don’t Say Gay Bill,’ Source Shares

Pixar has reportedly decided to reinstate a same-sex kiss in the upcoming animated children’s film “Lightyear” in response to Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay Bill” and the Walt Disney Company leadership’s response to it.

A source close to the production said the next feature film from the studio, about the real-life story of how the famed “Toy Story” character Buzz Lightyear came to be, will reportedly include a kiss between two female characters, reported Variety in a piece published Friday. One of the characters is reportedly a significant female role by the name of Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba).

The report noted that while the romantic relationship between the two female animated characters was never hidden, a kiss between them had reportedly been cut from the movie.

LGBTQ employees and allies at Pixar Animation Studios reportedly sent a joint statement recently to Disney CEO Bob Chapek claiming Disney execs had censored “overtly gay affection” in its family films, the outlet noted.

“Nearly every moment of overtly gay affection is cut at Disney’s behest, regardless of when there is protest from both the creative teams and executive leadership at Pixar,” the statement read, the outlet reported. “Even if creating LGBTQIA+ content was the answer to fixing the discriminatory legislation in the world, we are being barred from creating it.”

However, none of the sources Variety spoke to about the alleged cutting of these scenes in Pixar films could provide “first-hand knowledge of Disney executives directly” eliminating the LGBTQ scenes. The outlet noted that it was more an example of self-censorship by Pixar.

Pixar’s 2021 movie “Luca” is about young sea monsters Luca (played by Jacob Tremblay) and Alberto (played by Jack Dylan Grazer) who leave their underwater homes and explore where the humans live, where they can be one of them. The film’s director, Enrico Casarosa, responded to claims from the LGBTQ community about the movie, telling “The Wrap” that he “talked” a little about having Luca and Alberto’s friendship be of a romantic nature — but said the film focuses “on friendship” and is “pre-romance.”

“Some people seem to get mad that I’m not saying yes or no, but I feel like, well, this is a movie about being open to any difference,” Casarosa added.

In February, Disney and Pixar released the trailer for the upcoming film starring woke actor Chris Evans as the voice of Lightyear, which will include the origin story of the toy space man, reported Variety at the time.

“Animated movie[s] were an enormous part of my childhood,” Evans tweeted previously. “They were my escape. My adventures. My dreams. They were my first window into the magic of storytelling and performing… ‘Thank you’ doesn’t even come close.”

“Lightyear” is set to hit theaters June 17.

Pixar didn’t not respond to The Daily Wire’s request for comment by the time of this publication.
