Rep. Derrick Van Orden Mourns the Loss of His Daughter to Cancer
Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) shared heartbreaking news on Tuesday, revealing that he lost his oldest daughter, Sydney Marie (Van Orden) Martens, after a year-long battle with a very aggressive form of cancer.
In a statement, Van Orden expressed both grief and gratitude, saying, “It is with the most profound sense of grief and joy that Sara Jane and I announce the passing of our oldest daughter. Sydney died peacefully surrounded by her family.”
Van Orden, a former U.S. Navy SEAL, expressed his gratitude for the time they had with Sydney and the comfort of knowing she is now resting with the Lord. He also shared that Sydney is survived by her loving family, including her husband, children, parents, siblings, and extended family.
During this difficult time, Van Orden expressed his appreciation for the outpouring of love and support his family has received.

Following the announcement, top Republicans and some Democrats expressed their support for Rep. Van Orden and his family.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) tweeted, “No parent should have to experience this kind of heartbreak. I’m praying for @RepVanOrden and his family during this tragic time.”
The House Republican Conference also tweeted their prayers and support, saying, “We are all praying for @RepVanOrden and his family during this tragic time.”
