Dana Perino laments Trump’s absence at Republican debate, sees it as a missed chance.
Dana Perino Questions Trump’s Decision to Skip Debate
In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Dana Perino, the moderator of the second Republican debate, addressed the elephant in the room — or, in this case, not in the room. She questioned former President Donald Trump’s choice to speak to United Auto Workers union members in Michigan instead of participating in the debate.
“If you think back to 2015 and 2016, the debates were such a point of strength for him that I think it’s a missed opportunity,” Perino expressed.
The debate, set to take place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California, will be moderated by Fox Business’s Stuart Varney and Univision’s Ilia Calderon.
“I think everyone would love to have [Trump],” Perino added. “I’m sorry that he doesn’t feel like he wants to be there.”
Perino believes that voters would appreciate seeing Trump directly explaining his policy positions against his opponents.
“I also believe in the Serenity Prayer and not worrying about things I cannot control or change,” Perino said regarding Trump’s absence. ”And I think this is one of them.”
Despite Republicans expressing their desire to see Trump at the event, he did not attend the first debate last month either. However, his popularity in the polls has only increased since then.
Trump’s speech to UAW workers will occur just before the second debate, as thousands of UAW workers strike against major automakers in Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio. Trump aims to court blue-collar voters, who are becoming a significant part of the Republican Party’s base.
The former president employed a similar strategy during the first debate, opting for a pre-debate interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
