Four jabs at Donald Trump in the Republican debate.
Former President Donald Trump Takes Hits at Republican National Committee’s First Debate
Despite not being physically onstage, former President Donald Trump faced significant criticism from his eight opponents at the Republican National Committee’s first debate. While only one question directly addressed Trump, candidates took both subtle and direct jabs at him on various topics, including the 2020 election, his criminal cases, and his administration’s policy record.
Where Trump, DeSantis, and Rest of Republican 2024 Field Stand on Key Issues
Trump currently leads the Republican national primary, with a substantial lead over other candidates, including Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in second place and rising contender Vivek Ramaswamy. Here are the four shots that the candidates onstage took at Trump during Wednesday’s debate:
- Mike Pence did the right thing on Jan. 6, 2021
Several candidates praised former Vice President Mike Pence for certifying the 2020 election results, indirectly criticizing Trump’s debunked claims of election theft.
- Stronger hits on alleged criminal misconduct
Former Govs. Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson took stronger hits at Trump for alleged criminal misconduct. DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND) spoke about the weaponization of the Justice Department.
DeSantis emphasized the need to move forward from Jan. 6, 2021, and focus on Jan. 20, 2025, when the next president takes office. He urged Republicans to bring a winning message and look to the future.
Haley referred to Trump as the “most disliked politician in America” and argued that Republicans cannot win a general election against President Joe Biden with Trump as the nominee. She also highlighted Trump’s criminal cases as a reason for Republicans to fight against the weaponization of the DOJ.
- Support for Trump if convicted
All candidates, except Hutchinson and Christie, raised their hands and expressed their support for Trump if he was convicted.
- Christie’s record against Democrats
Christie emphasized his record of defeating Democrats and highlighted the challenges of beating an incumbent president. His comments resonated with Republicans concerned about another Trump-Biden matchup, as incumbent presidents historically have an advantage in reelection campaigns.
DeSantis criticizes Anthony Fauci and Trump’s COVID-19 response
DeSantis partially criticized the Trump administration for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the resulting shutdowns and economic impact. He vowed to lead the country out of lockdowns and prevent deep state bureaucrats from imposing restrictions. DeSantis also called for the firing of Anthony Fauci.
Haley criticizes Republicans and Democrats for national spending
Haley received applause for criticizing both Republicans and Democrats for the country’s national spending. She reminded viewers of Republicans’ voting record on spending and highlighted the consequences of their actions. Haley also pointed out the debt increase during Trump’s administration and the budget requests of both parties.
Overall, the debate showcased the candidates’ willingness to challenge Trump and address key issues facing the Republican Party.
