Perry Johnson files complaint against RNC and Fox News in Republican debate.
Republican Candidate Files Complaint Against Fox News and RNC Over “Corrupt” Debate Process
Republican presidential candidate Perry Johnson has taken a bold step by filing a complaint with the Federal Electoral Commission against Fox News and the Republican National Committee. Johnson, who is considered a long-shot candidate, went to great lengths to qualify for the debates, even selling $1 T-shirts to reach the required 40,000 individual donors for his campaign. Unfortunately, he failed to meet the polling threshold of 1%, which barred him from participating in the debate. In response, he filed a 60-page complaint with the FEC, denouncing the debate process as “corrupt.”
How to Watch the Republican Debate and What Time Does It Start?
“In a collusive effort to cherry-pick participants in the August 23, 2023 Republican presidential primary debate… FOX outsourced Debate participation criteria to the RNC, allowing the RNC to seize control over one of the most prominent opportunities available to presidential primary candidates,” Johnson wrote in his complaint. He further accused Fox News and the RNC of violating the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 by making prohibited corporate contributions to participating candidates.
Johnson emphasized the urgency of addressing these violations, especially with more presidential primary debates on the horizon. He called on the Commission to condemn these actions swiftly to prevent further manipulation of the primary process and to ensure the American public has comprehensive information about their legitimate choices for the Republican nomination.
Johnson is not alone in his frustration with the debate criteria. Fellow Republican candidates Larry Elder and Will Hurd have also voiced their protests. Elder announced his intention to sue the RNC to halt the debate, stating that the rules appeared rigged against him. Hurd expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of transparency and clarity in the debate requirements, calling it an unacceptable process for a presidential election.
It is clear that these candidates believe the debate process needs significant improvements to uphold the democratic values of fairness and transparency. The American people deserve better.
