GOP governors rank highest in popularity among all governors.
Republican Governors Lead in Approval Ratings
According to a recent poll, two Republican governors, Gov. Phil Scott (R-VT) and Gov. Mark Gordon (R-WY), have emerged as the most popular governors in the United States. The survey, conducted by Morning Consult, reveals that Gov. Scott enjoys an impressive 76% approval rating among voters in Vermont, while Gov. Gordon’s tenure is approved by 69% of voters in Wyoming.
Strong Republican Presence
Out of the top 10 most popular governors, seven are Republicans. Alongside Gov. Scott and Gov. Gordon, Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH), Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD), Gov. Mike Dunleavy (R-AK), Gov. Kay Ivey (R-AL), and Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV) also received high approval ratings, ranging from 62% to 63%.
However, Gov. Sununu recently announced that he will not be running for president in 2024, expressing concerns about a crowded field and the potential for a nominee with low voter support.
Beshear’s Popularity Amidst Biden’s Declining Approval
Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) stands out as a popular governor despite President Joe Biden’s sinking approval ratings. Beshear’s approval rating is nearly 50% among Republicans in his state, while 90% of Democrats approve of his performance. With an upcoming reelection campaign, the race between Beshear and Republican Daniel Cameron is expected to be closely watched ahead of the next presidential elections.
Reeves Faces Reelection Challenges
Gov. Tate Reeves (R-MS) is facing reelection this fall, but his approval rating currently stands at 48%, with 42% disapproving of his performance. While only 40% of independents and 19% of Democrats approve of Reeves, a positive sign for his reelection bid is that 76% of Republicans support him.
DeSantis and Burgum’s Approval Ratings
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), a potential 2024 presidential candidate, holds a 54% approval rating. However, his disapproval rating has increased from 38% to 42% between the first and second quarters of 2023. Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), another current governor running in 2024, has a solid 57% approval rating.
Unpopular Governors
On the other end of the spectrum, Gov. Tony Evers (D-WI) is the most disliked governor, with a 44% disapproval rating. Gov. Jay Inslee (D-WA) follows closely behind with a 43% disapproval rating. Notably, Gov. Inslee announced in May that he will not be seeking reelection.
It’s important to note that the survey has a margin of error ranging from plus or minus 1 percentage point to plus or minus 6 percentage points.
