Republican-led state passes bill mirroring Texas immigration law opposed by Biden administration
Republican Iowa Governor to Sign Immigration Bill Echoing Texas Law
Republican Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds is expected to sign a measure into law similar to the Texas immigration law currently in a legal tussle with the Biden administration.
On Tuesday, Iowa’s Republican-led state House passed Senate File 2340, a measure allowing state law enforcement to arrest illegal immigrants in the state who have faced deportation or denial of entry into the U.S., as reported by the Des Moines Register. The bill received bipartisan support, with every Republican and three Democrats voting for it, resulting in a 64-30 approval.
Ensuring Enforcement of Immigration Laws
Reynolds affirmed her commitment to sign the bill, emphasizing the need for states to uphold immigration laws amid federal enforcement lapses. She declared, “Americans deserve nothing less,” highlighting the bill’s purpose to safeguard national sovereignty and citizen safety.
- A judge must order the return of those convicted of illegal U.S. entry to their home country under the Iowa bill.
- Illegal entry would be classified as a class C felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, especially if linked to another felony.
The Texas immigration law, Senate Bill 4, faces legal challenges with the Biden administration, presently on hold as the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals evaluates the case.
No matter the 5th Circuit’s ruling, the contentious law is likely to return to the Supreme Court, with Texas Governor Greg Abbott committed to its defense up to the highest legal echelon.

Supporters of the Iowa and Texas laws assert their constitutional right and obligation to shield their states from what they see as a crisis at the southern U.S. border.
“The status quo of federal government failure is unsustainable,” remarked Iowa state Rep. Steven Holt, underscoring the necessity for proactive state measures to protect communities and ensure public safety.
