Perry Johnson, a Republican, halts presidential campaign.
Michigan Businessman Perry Johnson Suspends Presidential Campaign
Michigan businessman Perry Johnson, a long-shot contender for the Republican presidential nomination, has made the decision to suspend his campaign. The 75-year-old made this choice after failing to qualify for any of the Republican debates, effectively limiting his ability to share his vision on a national stage.
“With no opportunity to share my vision on the debate stage, I have decided at this time, suspending my campaign is the right thing to do,” he said in a statement.

Mr. Johnson, who funded his own campaign with his considerable personal wealth earned through companies specializing in industrial standards certification, accused the Republican National Committee (RNC) of corruption in their handling of the debate process.
“Not only was the debate process set up to keep outsiders off the stage and without a voice, but when we did meet their arbitrary metrics, corrupt leaders used their authoritarian power to kick me off the stage at 11 p.m. the Monday before the debate, despite our team working with Fox News all weekend on logistics,” Mr. Johnson said.
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the people should decide the next president of the United States, not the head of the RNC and her cronies,” he continued.
In accordance with RNC rules, candidates were required to satisfy specific polling and donor criteria to secure a position on the stage for the inaugural GOP presidential debate in Milwaukee that took place in August.
Mr. Johnson’s campaign employed several unconventional tactics to amass the requisite minimum of 40,000 donors, including the sale of “I Stand with Tucker” T-shirts in support of Tucker Carlson, providing free concert tickets for the country music duo Big & Rich, and distributing $10 gas cards to individuals willing to contribute as little as $1.
In 2022, he embarked on a gubernatorial campaign in Michigan but was excluded from the Republican primary ballot due to invalid signatures on his nominating petition.
Mr. Johnson’s presidential bid centered on a proposition to reduce annual discretionary spending by two percent, which he detailed in his book “Two Cents to Salvage America.”
In his statement announcing the suspension of his campaign, Mr. Johnson criticized “career politicians” in Washington for their failure to address spending and inflation.
“The American people deserve so much better than what career politicians in D.C. are giving them,” he said. “I ran for President with the single focus of ensuring that the country my children inherit is just as extraordinary as the America in which I grew up. I was worried that wouldn’t happen.
“The government’s out-of-control spending, which has caused rampant inflation and forced skyrocketing interest rates, is painful for middle America and hurting American families,” he added.
Although he has suspended his campaign, Mr. Johnson has not withdrawn from the ballot and will keep some staffers on in case “the dynamics of the race” change.
Other Republican candidates who have already suspended their presidential campaigns include former Texas congressman Will Hurd, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, and former Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton.
What were Perry Johnson’s criticisms of the RNC’s handling of the debate process, and how did he accuse them of corruption in excluding outsiders and limiting their voices
Michigan businessman Perry Johnson has announced the suspension of his presidential campaign. The 75-year-old candidate made this decision after failing to meet the requirements set by the Republican National Committee (RNC) to participate in any of the Republican debates. This lack of opportunity to share his vision on a national stage ultimately led him to suspend his campaign.
Johnson expressed his rationale for suspending his campaign in a statement. “With no opportunity to share my vision on the debate stage, I have decided at this time, suspending my campaign is the right thing to do,” he said.
One of the key factors that influenced Johnson’s decision was his inability to qualify for the Republican debates. These debates serve as an important platform for presidential candidates to express their views and connect with voters on a national level. As a result, Johnson felt that his campaign was handicapped in terms of reaching a wider audience.
Johnson, a successful businessman in Michigan, has funded his own campaign using his personal wealth accumulated through his companies specializing in industrial standards certification. He accused the RNC of corruption in their handling of the debate process, claiming that it was designed to exclude outsiders and limit their voices.
In particular, Johnson criticized the RNC for alleged arbitrary metrics and corrupt leadership. He stated, “Not only was the debate process set up to keep outsiders off the stage and without a voice, but when we did meet their arbitrary metrics, corrupt leaders used their authoritarian power to kick me off the stage at 11 p.m. the Monday before the debate, despite our team working with Fox News all weekend on logistics.”
Johnson reiterated his belief that the American people should have the final say in choosing the next president, rather than the RNC and its officials. This sentiment reflects his frustration with what he perceives as undemocratic practices within the party.
According to RNC rules, candidates were required to meet specific polling and donor criteria in order to secure a position on the debate stage. This was for the inaugural GOP presidential debate that took place in August in Milwaukee.
While Perry Johnson’s decision to suspend his campaign may be disappointing for his supporters, it highlights the challenges faced by lesser-known candidates in gaining visibility and traction in the competitive field of presidential politics. The 2024 presidential race continues to evolve, and it remains to be seen how the process will unfold for the remaining contenders seeking the Republican nomination.
