Republicans call on Congress to ratchet up ‘wholly inadequate’ funding for China defense

House Republicans Push⁤ for Additional Funding for Indo-Pacific

House Republicans on the China select‍ committee ‌are advocating for an‍ additional $12 billion for ⁤the Indo-Pacific region. In a letter to congressional leaders, they criticized President Joe‍ Biden’s proposed supplemental funding package as ⁢”wholly inadequate.”

Concerns Over Potential Conflict

During a recent Oval Office address, President Biden warned ⁣that ‍if⁤ Russia were to ⁤take away Ukraine’s independence, it could⁣ lead to conflict in other parts of the world, including the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East.

“We⁣ strongly agree,” the Republicans stated in the ⁣letter. “However, this is⁣ precisely why the resources⁤ dedicated to the Indo-Pacific in the administration’s proposed supplemental are wholly inadequate.”

Request for Additional Funding

Led by House China ⁢select committee ⁤Chairman Mike Gallagher, six Republicans are requesting an additional $12 billion on top of the $2 billion already allocated for Taiwan. This funding is part of‌ the $106 billion emergency aid package requested by President Biden for Israel and Ukraine.

“America is a Pacific nation, and it‍ is ⁤our long-standing ⁢and direct interest to ensure a stable and secure Indo-Pacific,” the letter emphasized.

The lawmakers ⁢argue that $10 billion‌ is needed to‍ strengthen the military’s response capabilities in preparation for potential conflicts. They also believe that $2‌ billion should be allocated for America’s own military stockpiles to assist Taiwan,⁤ and‌ that $650⁤ million should be reauthorized beyond fiscal 2023.

“Under PDA [Presidential Drawdown Authority], existing U.S. stocks of air defense systems, command-and-control equipment, gear⁣ for Taiwan’s reserve forces,⁣ land- and sea-based mines, and multiple launch rocket system vehicles could bolster Taiwan’s forces tomorrow,” the letter explained.

Meeting Between Biden and Xi Jinping

The letter comes after a highly anticipated meeting between President Biden and ⁣Chinese President Xi Jinping. Tensions⁢ between⁤ the two superpowers ‍have been rising due ⁢to technological developments,⁣ economic factors, and⁤ the flow of fentanyl from China to the United States.

“We have an opportunity to make a generational ⁢investment in our munitions industrial base and build weapons systems that are‌ critical for⁤ Ukraine,⁣ Israel, and our most important national security challenge, which is the CCP’s threat to Taiwan,” ⁣Gallagher stated.

“The most important form of communication to the Chinese Communist Party, far more important than anything‌ President Biden ‌said in San Francisco, is to surge hard power to the Indo-Pacific to make ⁣it impossible for Xi Jinping to conquer Taiwan, militarily. That is⁣ the language, the language ⁢of hard ⁤power, that⁣ dictators like Xi Jinping understand.”

⁢How does the strategic‌ importance of⁣ the Indo-Pacific impact global security and economic stability?

Already proposed in President Biden’s supplemental funding package. ‍The Republicans argue that this ‍additional funding is crucial to address the potential conflicts and security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

The letter highlights the strategic importance of ⁢the Indo-Pacific ⁤in maintaining peace and⁣ stability in the global arena. The region‍ is home to some of⁢ the world’s largest economies, most populous countries, and vital trade⁢ routes. As such, any conflict or instability in this region can have far-reaching consequences, impacting global security and ‍economic stability.

The Republicans emphasize that the proposed funding falls short in‌ addressing the needs and challenges‌ faced by the United States and its allies in⁣ the Indo-Pacific region. They‌ argue that the current geopolitical landscape demands a more robust response and commitment from the United States to counterbalance Chinese ‍influence and assert its leadership in the⁤ region.

The requested $12 billion funding⁢ aims to bolster the⁣ United States’ military capabilities, enhance ‍interoperability with regional allies, and strengthen partnerships through increased engagement and cooperation. The Republicans argue that this investment is essential to maintain a credible deterrent posture, uphold freedom of navigation, and promote a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific.

Furthermore, the letter emphasizes the need to prioritize funding for critical infrastructure projects in the region. These projects would enhance connectivity, promote economic development, and strengthen ties between the ⁤United States and its Indo-Pacific partners. The ⁤Republicans believe that such investments not only contribute to regional stability but also advance American interests by expanding economic opportunities and supporting⁢ the growth of like-minded nations.

The Republicans acknowledge the ongoing challenges posed by China’s aggressive actions and assertive⁤ behavior⁤ in the region. They ‌argue that ⁤allocating additional funding will ⁤enable the United States to ⁤comprehensively address ⁤these challenges and protect its interests in the Indo-Pacific.

In conclusion, House Republicans are urging congressional leaders to allocate an additional $12 billion for the Indo-Pacific region to address the growing security concerns and potential conflicts. They assert that President Biden’s proposed supplemental funding package is insufficient given the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific and the increasing Chinese influence.⁢ By investing in military capabilities, strengthening partnerships, and prioritizing infrastructure projects, the United States can⁣ effectively counterbalance Chinese influence, maintain regional stability, ⁣and safeguard its national interests in the Indo-Pacific.
